Remote Online Notary

Technology is transforming the title insurance industry

What is Remote Online Notarization (RON)?

Remote Online Notarization is an entirely digital process where documents are notarized remotely in an electronic format. Unlike traditional in-person notarization, both the signer and notary operate entirely online. The signer appears before the notary online using audio-video tools and applies an electronic signature. Signers can complete a closing from anywhere. Many states, however, require the notary to be physically present within their state of commission when performing Remote Online Notarizations.

Is electronic notarization legal?

Yes, remote online notarization is legal in certain states, although each state has its own laws and guidelines that must be adhered to. Wisconsin enacted the 2019 Wisconsin Act 125 on March 3, 2020. The new law took effect on May 1, 2020, allowing a party requiring a notarial act to appear before the Notary via audio-visual technology from a remote location. As of February 2025, Wisconsin is among over 45 states that permit electronic Remote Online Notarization (RON) of documents.
